The BC LTBIA Occupational Health and Safety Program templates have been developed to assist our member Log Building Operations to operate in compliance with the Workers’ Compensation Act and Regulations that require most building operations to have an Occupational Health and Safety Program in effect at their worksites. The number of employees that your company regularly employs dictates the type of program that you are required to have in effect.
Documents are provided in Microsoft Word (.rtf, .doc & .docx) format so you may edit the documents for your company's use. If you don't have Microsoft Word it's possible to edit the documents using Google Drive or open source office suites Libre Office and Open Office.
20 or more workers
You are required to have a formal program and a Joint Health and Safety Committee consisting of at least four (4) members of which employees are a minimum of 50% of the membership. The BC LTBIA program templates consist of:
- Large Company Manager – Supervisor Handbook which describes the Company occupational health and safety policy and related provisions in detail. It details the responsibilities of the owner, supervisor(s) and employees with respect to Occupational Health and Safety and outlines the various components of the Program in effect at the Company.
- Employee Handbook that provides all employees with company orientation and safety information. This handbook is issued during the employee orientation on the first day of employment with the Company. When you first implement your OHSP, all existing employees should be given a group orientation and issued the handbook at a safety meeting.
- Joint Committee Manual – provides guidelines for forming and operating your joint committee.
- WHMIS Guide – provides guidelines for managing the required WHMIS program
- Safe Work Procedures Manual – Provides written safe work procedures for common log building job tasks. You are encouraged to add to the manual with any job tasks that are done at your site that are not included in the manual.
- Fall Protection / Fall Prevention Plan – Provides a template for planning for specific fall risks on specific projects and/or job-site locations.
- Accident Investigation Guide – Provides instructions for completing a comprehensive accident/incident investigation using the WorkSafe BC 4 part form.
- Workplace Inspection Manual – Provides detailed instructions and a comprehensive checklist for completing monthly worksite inspections of the log building yard and workshops.
As part of your program you are required to:
- Hold regular monthly safety meetings
- Complete monthly workplace inspections
- Maintain a WHMIS (1988 and 2015) program that includes training and education for workers
- Complete Accident/Incident Investigations as and when required
- Develop Fall Protection, Fall Prevention plans when required
- Maintain health and safety statistics
10 to 19 workers
You are required to have a less formal program that includes a designated Worker Health and Safety Representative (Part 3, Div 4, 139). The worker Health and Safety Representative has the same duties (where practicable) as a Joint Health and Safety Committee. The less formal program BC LTBIA program templates consist of:
- Small Company Manager – Supervisor Handbook which describes the Company occupational health and safety policy and related provisions in detail. It details the responsibilities of the owner, supervisor(s) and employees with respect to Occupational Health and Safety and outlines the various components of the Program in effect at the Company.
- Employee Handbook 10 – 19 that provides all employees with company orientation and safety information. This handbook is issued during the employee orientation on the first day of employment with the Company.
